What we do

We are the UK's leading provider of Human Factors expertise in Healthcare. Our Chartered HF professionals have experience of working within the full range of healthcare spaces, with the addition of expertise in teaching and evaluation. Our healthcare experts all have training in Human Factors, and bring experience of senior positions in healthcare. The services we offer use that unique range of experience to offer you expertise on hand to solve your organisational challenges. Because experience matters when the system is complex, and healthcare is always complex.

Hospital Evaluation and Design

Whether you are designing a whole new hospital, or tweaking an environment that's not quite working for you - Human Factors analysis can help you understand and evidence the critical design decisions, all in line with the Health Building Notes where applicable. Sometimes the healthcare teams need help to articulate their needs clearly, sometimes those needs aren't already well understood. Whatever the challenge, we can work with your architects and clinical teams to ensure the design of your clinical spaces matches the needs of patients and staff.

Healthcare IT implementation

Implementing IT into healthcare is difficult to get right and risky to get wrong. Human Factors analysis can help you understand and describe the key clinical pathways that are needed within the IT solution. We work with NHS England's Digital Clinical Safety Standards where the analysis we complete will help develop the safety case for implementation.

Presentations & Education

Our faculty includes lecturers with years of experience from multiple high esteem universities including University of Oxford. Whether a guest lecture for an hour, a facilitated workshop, or a bespoke course, we have a wealth of education offers. As an approved provider of PSIRF education programmes, we have a broad range of offerings to meet that need. Find out more on our dedicated PSIRF pages

Medical Device Design

Get help meeting the MHRA requirements for usability engineering for new devices, or get support in the evaluation of current systems. We are experienced in a range of human factors tools for design. We can advise on development of use cases to support the user testing, or evaluate competitor usability challenges to help you get a step ahead in the product development.

WHO WE WORK WITH

In all organisations, we're working with clinical teams, to understand and help solve problems. We help by bringing our expertise direct to you, through working alongside your teams, or in taught sessions.

Case Studies

Implementing new EPR system

IT      Design      Usability

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust are implementing a new Electronic Patient Record. We are working with them to develop their safety case for implementation. We are taking a structured human factors approach to studying the clinical processes, and then assessing the new EPR in simulation to understand where the greatest improvements in clinical care will be, and where there are any risks that need mitigation.

Working with Donna Forsyth, we have designed the new oversight specification to support the implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF). We spoke to patients, families, clinical teams, provider boards and Integrated Care Boards. This specification brings in a new, different approach to overseeing learning from investigation in our NHS.
